BAPCO 2021 speaker interview: into the future

NENA immediate past president, Monica Million, predicts that emergency services' use of the cloud will be ubiquitous in coming years.

Can you describe what you’ll be talking about during your presentation at BAPCO 2021. Why is it an important topic?

I will be discussing cloud solutions for control rooms and supplemental data, and how it can dramatically impact the response and outcome of an incident.

What will be the most transformative development over the next five years in terms of the technology? What will that mean for user operations, as well as the broader market?

The biggest development will be the movement of solutions into the cloud. This will make operations more agile, providing better solutions for data to be shared and acted upon.

This holds implications for the broader market. If a service provider/industry partner does not have a cloud-based solution, I predict their market share will dramatically reduce.

What opportunities do you see for the sector in the current environment? What big changes would you like to see in the world of UK public safety communications?

The opportunity to innovate because of the flexibility of the cloud are immeasurable. I would like to see some operations workshops with control room professionals, specifically around this area.

We need to explore how supplemental data and cloud solutions can begin to impact on how resources are dispatched and managed. We also need to know how that can ultimately impact or increase the probability of improved outcome for the incident we are responding to.

What key messages or take-home points would you like people to get from your session? What will be most useful to them from a practical point of view?

That supplemental data is here today. The question is, how can control room personnel use that information to improve their delivery of service? There are solutions already available to the market that integrate the supplemental data.

Also, I would like people to take home that movement to the cloud is inevitable. Agencies need to develop process flows demonstrating the impact that this will make to overall service delivery.

Which conference sessions are you most looking forward to seeing?

Control Room mental health, staffing, and industry cloud solutions.
