KAPPA.jpgSmurfit Kappa’s Kraftliner facility in Piteå, Sweden – the largest paper mill of its kind in Europe – has procured a new Motorola Solutions TETRA system to replace its analogue network through a five-year lease agreement.

It includes 15 MTM5500 TETRA mobile radios and a combination of 130 MTP3500 and MTP3550 TETRA portable radios provided by Celab Communications, which exclusively supplies Motorola Solutions radio technology. Celab Communications leased the system as Smurfit Kappa wanted an option that was both affordable and upgradable. The lease has the option to be extended after the five-year agreement ends.

Smurfit Kappa’s key requirements for the system were good audio, coverage and a well-proven technology supplier. Four Cobham Wireless DSP (digital signal processing) TETRA off air repeaters also provide sufficient signal strength over the entire facility and allow coverage to basement areas. Safety features such as emergency calls, announcements and call priority were important aspects of the system and for redundancy reasons the solution is equipped with two MTS2 Motorola Solutions’ TETRA base stations to eliminate a potential single point of failure and increase reliability.

Celab Communications expects that the system’s capacity and streamlined communications will be able to contribute to Smurfit Kappa’s goal for continuous improvement of the site’s operations.

“The deployments went really well and the customer is very happy,” said Lars-Göran Johansson, COO of Celab Communications.
