Airbus introduces hybrid base station to Middle East

Airbus has introduced its new hybrid TETRA and LTE TB4 base station to the Middle East where it is being used by the Professional Communication Corporation – Nedaa, the security networks provider for the Dubai Government.

The TB4 supports both TETRA and 4G/5G technology on the same hardware platform. The base station is modelled on Airbus’ TETRA TB3 base station and carries all the same features as the popular and more. These features include dual homing, a type 1 handover, air-interface encryption, base station fallback and advanced security capabilities.

The smaller-scale base station can be used in conjunction with the TETRA TB3 as it is fully compatible with its previous version. Airbus said that the TB4 sets a clear path from TETRA towards 4G/5G use since the high-tech system module supports both TETRA and LTE access.

The TB4 also provides the very latest technology from cellular network solutions, such as the integration of multi-carrier remote radios. The TB4 forms a key part of Airbus’ approach to the wireless ecosystem. It is based on Nokia’s AirScale base station platform and will enable its customers to benefit from a long TETRA lifecycle and a smooth evolution toward wireless broadband.

Airbus said the new solution has a number of benefits for customers including a reduction in power consumption will decrease and an increase in flexibility thanks to the extensive network coverage and use of mainstream technology standardised by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), adapted for TETRA. They will also be able to benefit from the higher integration and longer operational life for networks operating in 2030 and beyond.

Moreover, customers who are currently using the TB3 can the same antenna configurations for the TB4, which will also enable a smooth transition towards 4G/5G networks, with significant cost savings in network planning and implementation, Airbus stated. The TB4 has initially been made available for a 380 MHz frequency.
